March Movie Preview: Trailers

Posted on

The third month of the year is upon us, we are out of the winter slump and headed for a spring of BIG and EXCITING movies. Check out the films in theatres this month.

1. Non-Stop

While technically released on the last day of February, this film still makes the cut because it’s playing in theatres during the first week of March. Plus, action-thriller-mystery mid-flight on an airplane, I’m all up for it. The film stars Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) and the synopsis reads as follows –

An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passengers at risk unless the airline transfers $150 million into an off-shore account.

Check out the trailer below, which also reminds us of a certain Jodie Foster film, Flightplan, but nonetheless looks exciting and full of action.

2. 300: Rise of An Empire

The much awaited sequel to 2006’s blockbuster 300 releases on March 7, 2014, with Lena Headey and Rodrigo Santoro reprising their roles as Queen Gorgo and Xerxes respectively while adding Eva Green, Jack O’Connell and Sullivan Stapleton to the rosters. The film’s synopsis reads –

Greek general Themistokles leads the charge against invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

Check out the trailer below, which is reminiscent of the action and cinematography that made it’s predecessor a hit.

3. Need for Speed

Remember when we posted about the first trailer for this film back in Septembe – yes, we are THAT excited for this film adaptation of the popular video game series. The film releases on March 14, 2014 and stars Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots and Michael Keaton. The film’s synopsis reads as follows –

Fresh from prison, a street racer who was framed by a wealthy business associate joins a cross country race with revenge in mind. His ex-partner, learning of the plan, places a massive bounty on his head as the race begins.

Check out the trailer below, filled with high speed car chases and action sequences and the film will hopefully go on to become a successful franchise.

4. Divergent

We’ve been covering the upcoming film adaptation for the last few months and the release is finally upon us! Out on March 21, 2014, the film stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James in leading roles as well as Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller and Zoe Kravitz in supporting roles. The film’s synopsis reads as follows –

In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she’s Divergent and won’t fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it’s too late.

Check out the trailer below, which mirrors the book VERY closely, a recipe for any book-to-film adaptation’s success. In fact, the studio is so sure about the success of the film, that they’ve set release dates for the sequels Insurgent (March 20, 2015) and Allegiant (March 18, 2016) and has hired Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman to work on a previously drafted version of the script for the sequel.

5. Noah

This take on the Biblical prophet, Noah, releases on March 28, 2014 and stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Hopkins along with young and rising stars (and certain to attract younger audiences) Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Douglas Booth. The synopsis for the film reads –

The Biblical Noah suffers visions of an apocalyptic deluge and takes measures to protect his family from the coming flood.

The film has faced some controversy due to religious groups resulting in the producers adding an “explanatory note” stating that artistic license was taken in the making of the film. The trailer, however, promises a mixture of epic, period film with disaster movie thrown together and at the very least, offers a few hours of entertainment. Check out the trailer below –

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qmj5mhDwJQ]

6. The Raid 2

The sequel to the hit 2011 Indonesian action movie The Raid: Redemption, the film has Iko Uwais returning as Rama on March 28, 2014 in a limited release in North America. Originally titled “The Raid 2: Berandal”, the synopsis of the film reads as –

Only a short time after the first raid, Rama goes undercover with the thugs of Jakarta and plans to bring down the syndicate and uncover the corruption within his police force

Check out the action packed trailer below that promises more punches, gunshots and blood spilling, and if you haven’t watched the first film yet, watch it NOW – you won’t be disappointed.

Which films are you excited to watch in March?

A Fangirl’s Guide to Surviving the Movies

Posted on

With the release of YA adaptations like Vampire Academy (February 7) and Divergent (March 21) in the near future, we thought it best to chalk up a guideline on surviving the movies. We barely survived the feels during Catching Fire and we still get goose bumps when we listen to “Let It Go” from Frozen. It’s not just YA adaptations that give us the chills, as you can see that even trailers for the upcoming Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past have excited us!

It goes without saying that as book nerds we need to support our authors when their films hit theatres by being there on the first weekend to watch the adaptations. Granted that most authors don’t have a say in the adaptation, but it is still their work that is coming to life and you need to show them that you have their back. More than often, there is a chance you will end up liking the film.

But how does one handle the feels – you ask? Fear not girls (and boys) … here we present a fangirl’s (and a fanboy’s) guide to watching the adaptation. Read it, enjoy it and go watch the film adaptations on opening day!

1. Know your source material

If you are a certified fangirl, you have got to know the source material. Whether that means you have to go pick up and read the next book being adapted into film or catch up with film franchises before the sequels hit the cinema. And if you are already acquainted with the source material, brush up your memory so you are ON IT! Do it quickly … because the films will be here before you know it – and you can’t fangirl if you don’t know what is going on!

2. Find your partner(s)-in-fangirling

There is no fun in going to see a film filled with the feels all alone … you need someone to fangirl with you … so get your friends hyped up and ready, choose a date (the first day of course), pick the flavour of popcorn and get in line to fangirl together! And let’s face it … when Lissa and Christian first meet and Rose and Dimitri start their training sessions in Vampire Academy or when Tris jumps and meets Four for the first time (as do we) … you will need to hold hands with your BFF to stop your heart jumping out of your body from excitement!

(Source: lavenderstories)

And if your friends are not fangirls/fanboys like you, just drag them to the film anyway. Invoke the BFF code of conduct and promise to watch whichever film they are excited for when it hits theatres (as long as they come and watch your film first).

3. Watch the trailers

Get ready for the film by watching the trailers, interviews, TV spots. After all, there is nothing better than the visual medium to get you excited for the big screen version.

WE ARE ALREADY FANGIRLING !!!!

4. Pack in the tissue boxes

You can’t go off to the cinema without a handful of tissues to come to your rescue … and this will especially be true when you will be watching the film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars this June! We are tearing up already, you guys!

TFIOS-2

5. Dress up for the ultimate experience

Are you a Moroi or a Dhampir? A Dauntless initiate or an Erudite? Well … wear your loyalty on your sleeve and dress up as your favourite character or just don the jewelery and the logo on yourself by wearing merchandise. You can find official Vampire Academy book series merchandise on Arcane Vault and The Hunger Games merchandise are available widely in stores. Check out the looks of the Rose and Tris that you can wear to the film (more at Teen.com). A word of advice – don’t carry any kind of weapons – real or fake – shown in these photos when you dress up as these characters, be it for the theatre viewing or elsewhere. Unless it is Halloween or a Dress Up Party, in which case, use FAKE weapons.

6. Keep your fix handy

You can’t get into the cinema hall without your fix of food – be it popcorn, chocolate, candy, milk duds, ice cream or soda – pick your poison, but pick it, because some of us fangirls need to eat our feelings. Though don’t drink too much soda, after all, you wouldn’t want to miss any scenes because of an untimely bathroom break!

chocolate - dallasfoodorg

7. Keep calm and enjoy the film

Remember that the book and the films are two different mediums and things need to be portrayed a little differently to work on screen. So don’t let the changes and/or differences take away from your big screen experience of having your favourite books and characters come to life. Remember, even the widely successful and critically acclaimed Catching Fire adaptation had some changes and they’ve added a new character, Antonius, for the Mockingjay films. Sometimes, changes are necessary, but it doesn’t mean that they ruin the movie or the experience for you.

8. Allocate your time to fangirl after the movie

So now that you’ve watched the film and seen the book come to life and fangirled quietly in the dark of the movie theatre – you need a place to properly fangirl! So continue the hangout or catch up with your friends the next day (if you went to a late night showing) to discuss the film. Perhaps you would even like to blog your feelings and share them with the world – we all agree that blogging is amazing – so get going!

9. Be considerate

Chances are, the film hasn’t released in other parts of the world, but here on the Internet everything can go viral within hours and spoilers can leak and ruin the movie experience for other fans for no fault of their own. Be considerate on Facebook and Twitter which don’t have a spoiler coding and mark all your posts with a spoiler tag.

10. Go watch the film again

Again, we can’t stress how important it is to go and support these film adaptations, and while we’re at it, all YA adaptations so that more empowering stories for young adults can be made and reach a wider audience. Just check out these authors supporting Vampire Academy which opens in the US on February 7. Ally Carter, author of Gallagher girls and many other works, encourages fans to watch YA film adaptations because it’s the best way to ensure other works are adapted. Veronica Roth, author of Divergent (the sequels for which are already greenlit) also tweeted that she would be watching the film opening weekend.

https://twitter.com/OfficiallyAlly/status/428603999252914177 https://twitter.com/VeronicaRoth/status/431172056193847296

The opening numbers are important guys, so do it for the sequels and to support the YA genre. Watch it opening night and opening weekend and opening week, if possible. After all, fangirling once isn’t enough … are we right? But most important of all – enjoy yourself and enjoy the experience.

PS – This article isn’t just for Vampire Academy and Divergent fans. We’ve used their examples as those films are closest, but for all fans across all genres and books. If you are a fangirl (or fanboy) – this post will relate to you!

Thanks to our friend @FansofVA for many of the ideas and @VA_Netherlands, a casual conversation with whom, gave birth to this post.

MTV Movie Brawl 2014

Posted on Updated on

Us fangirls love events like this, but they sure can be stressful!

So, we’re down to our final four now, and it won’t be long before we’ll know this years’ most anticipated film.

In this clash of the fandoms, we’d thought we’d give you the break-down of what are sure to be the hottest movies of 2014.

Divergent

This YA adaptation goes head-to-head with fellow YA franchise, Vampire Academy. Divergent tells the story of Tris, who lives in dystopian Chicago, where residents are sorted into 5 factions according to certain personality traits. But come aptitude test day, Tris is told she doesn’t belong to a single faction, making her ‘divergent’ and a threat. A threat to the perfect system. It stars familiar faces like Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Kate Winslet and Maggie Q.

VS

Vampire Academy

Based on the hugely popular book series, this movie tells the story of Rose Hathaway, a dhampir (half-human, half-vampire) who is training to protect her best friend, a Moroi princess: Lissa Dragomir. Dhampirs train to become ‘guardians’ to the Moroi – benevolent, magic-using, alive vampires – from the Strigoi, the undead, evil vampires. But there’s a lot more to this friendship and this story than it seems. Starring Zoey Deutch, and TV faves, Sarah Hyland and Cameron Monaghan, it’s the one to look out for.

AND

Veronica Mars

This highly anticipated movie continues the TV series, and goes up against The Maze Runner in this epic semi-final battle. It stars Kristen Bell as Veronica, 9 years later, and now living in the Big Apple. But as she’s drawn back to her home town to solve a murder, her old sleuthing ways re-surface.

VS

The Maze Runner

It seems 2014 is the year of YA-book adaptations as this one hits theatres later on in the year. Based on the novel by James Dashner and starring Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien, it’s sure to be a hit. This one follows Thomas, a boy who wakes up in a box in the middle of nowhere… a village called The Glade surrounded by a massive stone maze. He becomes a runner, to help figure out the maze, and a way to get out, but the question is… Who put them there in the first place?

The Maze Runner

Who do you want to see win?

The theatrical trailer for the upcoming adaptation for Divergent released on November 13, 2013 and we for one reason or another, we couldn’t bring you our reactions – but fear not initiates, for here they are, better late than never we say!

Check out this trailer below :

And our reactions, excuse the fangirling that will ensue … but tread carefully, spoilers from the book ahead!

1

We start off with a picturesque view of sunrise over the field.

A shot of Mrs. Prior cutting Beatrice’s golden locks and tying her hair into an Abnegation bun – straight from the books, folks!

6

The skyline of a dystopian Chicago.

7

From the far side, Erudite (blue), Abnegation (grey), Candor (black and white) and Amity (red and yellow) initiates line up before the building. Where are the Dauntless in black you ask?

8

Why … the Dauntless are jumping out of the trains!

9

Seems like the Choosing Ceremony speech is being given by Jeanine Matthews in the film!

10

It may be the post-apocalyptic world, but it doesn’t mean that you forget to use fake eyelashes and mascara!

One of the simulations in which Tris wakes up – even though this was paired with her test simulation in the trailer, we are pretty sure it’s from another point in the film.

15

Tris, the first jumper, jumps right in!

16

And look who is waiting there to greet her!

17

We know Tris, we know, we would be in the same condition if we met Four.

19

Lets just address the fact that Four is a BOSS when it comes to training new initiates!

21

Bad Peter, very bad!

22

Do you feel the tingles?!

23

Tris sure does!

24

Tris volunteers for the knife-throwing!

26

And Four goes all out!

27

“I want to be Brave and Selfless and Intelligent and Honest and Kind.” *Melts and then dies*

29

Oh the Dauntless, if they aren’t leaping into or out of the trains, then they are hanging on to them!

Some scenes from the climax of the film.

The Dauntless headquarters has been so perfectly carved out from our imagination!

34

THE FEELS!! YOU GUYS! THE FEELSSSSSSS!!

33

You guys, probably one of my favourite parts of the book!

35

and another favourite – the ziplining scene!

So tell us which were your favourite parts from the trailer and which scenes are you excited to see when the film comes out on March 21, 2014?

MTV’s All Access Photos + Interviews!

Posted on Updated on

Josh Horowitz from MTV chatted with Theo James and Miles Teller from Divergent and Zoey Deutch from Vampire Academy, in the lead up to the VMAs … here are some of the screen grabs!

Here are the screen grabs from the chat with Theo James and Miles Teller!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The boys started the show with beat-boxing into the mic and then spoke about the fandom, their experiences at Comic-Con, speculation about the final book Allegiant with Theo talking about “sexy ghosts” and Miles talking about everything becoming Peter-centric! Theo also spoke about how they were doing more than 600 push ups on set and how filming the Ferris Wheel scene made him ‘pee his pants’!

Taking fan questions from twitter where they had to describe each other in one word, Miles chose ‘tan’ for Theo while Theo chose ‘long’ for Miles after some deliberation! When Theo was asked about his work on British drama “Downton Abbey”, he spoke about his character, Mr. Kemal Pamuk’s demise describing it as “If there’s a way to die, you gotta do it like that”.

Miles joked about how there was going to be “Divergent – The Musical” at the Video Music Awards saying “Diverge Me! Diverge Me” while speaking about his enthusiasm in seeing Justin Timberlake perform at the VMAs.

The full interview with Theo and Miles can be watched below –

We were obviously fangirling most of the time watching this interview, between Miles’ cute glances and Theo’s devilish charm … we just about gathered our wits to bring these photos to you and to compose ourselves for Zoey Deutch’s segment!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Before Zoey Deutch’s interview, we had another glimpse of the Vampire Academy Teaser trailer … I don’t know about you, but I keep watching it everytime I find it embedded in an article! So Zoey got in and started talking about her audition process for the film, she had auditioned for two scenes, which were difficult for her to shoot in the film. She said she is usually very superstitious about the auditioning process and when she finally landed the role, she was excited to be able to tell her family! Zoey also spoke about how she knew of the material from before hand and that made her want to get the part even more.

Zoey spoke about the initial skepticism amongst fans of the books and admitted that she isn’t usually the ‘badass-looking’ girl but that she worked hard for the role and fans have appreciated that. She admits that she feels very close to the character of Rose now!

During the filming process, Zoey says that she wasn’t allowed to see any of the dailies, but whatever she saw, she says is very aesthetically pleasing and that she was really excited to see the teaser trailer to see what “route they were taking marketing wise.”

Josh then decided to do a breakdown of the teaser trailer and flashed up an image of Danila Kozlovsky from the teaser where Dimitri is walking towards the camera in his trademark duster, with the bike explosion behind him. Zoey spoke about being awestruck with Danila, who plays her mentor Dimitri Belikov in the film. Describing the scene Zoey said that it was from the beginning of the movie when she first sees him as he walks towards her [swoon].

The next image was of the three girls, Rose, Lissa and Natalie and Zoey’s first reaction was “Look at Sarah’s boobs … look at how hot she is.” Zoey went on to describe Sarah as being awesome in the movie and in her role as Natalie Dashkov saying “she kills it” in the movie.

The next image was of Zoey holding up the silver stake (or knife as some fans speculate) in a still from the teaser. Zoey’s first reaction “Look at the cute face I’m making.” Zoey says the fight sequences were really fun to shoot, but were emotionally and physically draining. As a fun fact, Zoey stated that she can rip away a man’s balls, making Josh Horowitz feel very uncomfortable!

When the still of the lust charm scene appeared, Zoey started screaming for her mother, jokingly saying “they are making me feel weird.” She said that the scene wasn’t awkward to film because Danila was such a gentleman on set adding “because he is so hot and steamy” when told that the lust charm scene was the fan favourite. Zoey went on to say that “everyone should be more like Danila” and that “he is one of the greatest people I’ve ever met,” adding that he has “worked on a lot of films where he’s had to do much more intimate things” and “he was very giving …” quickly adding “that sounds wrong” and stating that “he was very respectful of me.”

It is interesting to note that the two did not have a screen test because they share such a chemistry in the released still and teaser and Zoey admitted that they do have a lot of chemistry. She says that Danila can share chemisty even with a carpet and that they became best friends from the first day they met. She says “I felt like he was my best friend from day one, he is an amazing person and a great actor.” Speaking of co-star and on-screen BFF, Lucy Fry, Zoey said “Lucy is my best friend now … I talk to her everyday.”

Answering a fan question where Zoey was to describe Danila in three words, Zoey’s answer was “I am in love.”

Another fan question asked Zoey how she would describe Rose’s fashion style and Zoey said ”badass”, adding that she loved the costumes she wore as Rose on set and that Rose didn’t own that many clothes because she didn’t come from a rich background, and everything she had was given to her by the Academy or by Lissa’s family [she pronounced Lissa correctly – or at least the way the fandom has been pronouncing it all these years – more things to make us swoon]. Answering a fan question, Zoey said that if she was a dhampir [pronouncing it as daam-peer] in real life she would protect her sister, Maddie Deutch.

Zoey also spoke of the time she met author Richelle Mead, describing her as being so sweet and that she was so nervous that she feels like she talked too much with the author. When asked how many of the books she had read, Zoey said the first two and added she was currently reading the third, Shadow Kiss, even though she was instructed by director Mark Waters not to, as they wanted to take Rose’s development slowly, breaking it down with every movie. Zoey assured fans that the movie is very faithful to the books, as stated by the author herself, and that they really want to please the fans.

Zoey also spoke about her fondness for her mother, actress Lea Thompson and how she ended up with a huge telephone bill because of all the text messages she sent her.

In a little “vampire trivia” quiz, Zoey was shown hidden images of some of the vampires from pop culture. First up was Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) from True Blood, which Zoey answered as Ian Somerhalder (when his image popped up later, she did guess his name correctly). Zoey also took some time guessing Count Dracula from Sesame Street, confessing she had never watched the show as a child.

At the end of the interview, Zoey said she was really excited to be at her first VMAs and was looking forward to performances from Kanye West, Miley Cyrus (especially the twerking) and Lady Gaga!

You can watch Zoey’s entire interview on YouTube below, thanks to Dhampir Life!

Don’t forget to tune into the VMAs on Sundays!
